Cycle 3, week 18

Art Project: Jim Davis (Garfield), page 105 in Discovering Great Artists.   Bring in printed examples or library book comics, especially a Garfield example.  The students are going to create their own comic, one square or multiple squares.  Supplies include printer paper, pencils, rulers, crayons, and markers.  It may be necessary to brainstorm with the kids to help them think of a comical idea (i.e, a giraffe leans over its enclosure in a zoo and eats a kid’s ice cream).

Cycle 3, week 16

Art Project:  Read about Andrew Wyeth, in Discovering Great Artists, page 87.  I tried the rubber cement idea–it really flopped for me, not to mention it won’t work in a 30 minute time frame (sketch, add rubber cement, dry, paint, dry??? ).  Instead explain Wyeth’s background and subject matter, provide examples on a tablet, laptop,  or library book of his work, and have the kids sketch a minimalist landscape or room with minimal subject matter (solitary person, lone tree or house, etc).  We will use water color paper and water color for this project.

Hands-on Science:  Janice VanCleave’s 201 …Experiments,  “Bubbler” #93 (video)

Revision: We are going to follow Livermoore’s video because she managed more impressive results with less fuss. VIDEO

Cycle 3, week 15

Art Project:  Georgia O’Keefe, page 86 in Discovering Great Artists.  Smaller is better:  I made 7 x 7 inch poster board squares for my kids to paint an oversized flower that spilled off the edges, and all three agreed it was too big.  We will try 5 x 5 or smaller for the community.  We will have paints, pallettes, brushes, cups of water, 5 x 5 posterboard, etc.  We need a variety of close-up flower pictures from magazines for the students to copy.

Grandma Moses Art Project (no video) Tutors: Read page 84 in Discovering Great Artists .  Parents, take time to look at Grandma Moses art work online (there is a link below).  Guide your child in remembering scenes from his or her  past (pool parties, catching fireflies, flying kites, sledding, etc) that could be recreated on paper during the next art session at CC.
